Sculptra - also known as the Sculptra filler, Sculptra dermal filler, or Sculptra PLLA - is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen biostimulator manufactured by Q-Med AB, a Galderma company (Uppsala, Sweden). Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers that add volume directly, Sculptra works by stimulating the skin's own production of new collagen and elastin, gradually restoring volume in depressed areas and improving the appearance of skin creases, wrinkles, and folds over several weeks, with a long-lasting aesthetic improvement of two years or more. Sculptra is supplied as two vials per pack; each vial contains 367.5 mg of sterile dry powder - 150 mg PLLA, 90 mg sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and 127.5 mg mannitol - reconstituted with sterile water for injection before use. Professional use
Sculptra is for professional use only, by appropriately trained healthcare professionals working under aseptic conditions in a clinical setting. The dry powder is reconstituted with sterile water for injection and injected into the deep dermis, the subcutaneous layer, or (for facial use) the supraperiosteal plane, using a 25-26G thin-wall needle or a 22-25G blunt-tip cannula. Aspirate before injecting and never inject intravascularly. A treatment cycle of up to four sessions, spaced at least four weeks apart, is generally recommended; do not exceed six vials per session.
Treatment areas
- Nasolabial folds, cheeks, marionette lines, temples, chin crease, and decolletage; and non-facial areas including the gluteal area, posterior thighs, and upper arms. Do not inject into the vermilion of the lips or the periorbital area.
Patient profile
For adults only; not for use in patients under 18 years, or in pregnant or breastfeeding women, as safety has not been established. Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any constituent of the product; a history of anaphylaxis or multiple severe allergies; or an active systemic or local disease (such as inflammation, infection, or tumours) in or near the treatment site until the underlying process is controlled. When the suspension is supplemented with lidocaine, do not use in patients with hypersensitivity to lidocaine or other amide-type local anaesthetics. Use with caution in patients prone to hypertrophic scarring or keloid formation, including those with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI.
How Sculptra Works
Sculptra works through poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) microparticles. After injection, the microparticles are gradually surrounded by connective tissue with a build-up of new collagen and elastin fibres over several weeks, providing gradual soft-tissue augmentation and skin thickening rather than the immediate volumising effect of a hyaluronic acid filler. The aesthetic improvement is long-lasting, generally two years or more, as the PLLA slowly biodegrades.
