Juvéderm Ultra 2 is a pyrogen-free, sterile solution of non-animal, cross-linked hyaluronic acid by Allergan Aesthetics, developed to fill medium-sized depressions of the skin and for lip definition. It is suitable for authorised medical practitioners, who inject it into the mid dermis. The formulation contains 24 mg/mL of hyaluronic acid with 3 mg/mL of lidocaine hydrochloride to reduce pain during treatment and is supplied for professional use only. It comes in a graduated pre-filled syringe.

Juvéderm Ultra 2 is an injectable medical device for administration only by licensed, appropriately trained healthcare practitioners in a controlled clinical setting, and is not for retail sale or self-administration. The documented route is mid-dermis injection. Two restrictions are absolute: it must not be injected into the eyelids, and it must not be injected into blood vessels. Under-eye application must only be performed by specifically trained specialists, and the product must not be overcorrected. It must not be used in areas with cutaneous inflammatory or infectious processes such as acne or herpes, and must not be used simultaneously with laser treatment, deep chemical peels or dermabrasion; for surface peels, injection is not recommended where the inflammatory reaction is significant.

Juvéderm Ultra 2 is not suitable for patients with untreated epilepsy, patients prone to hypertrophic scarring, patients with hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid or to gram-positive bacterial proteins, patients with hypersensitivity to lidocaine or amide-type local anaesthetics, patients suffering from porphyria, patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or children. It must not be used in areas affected by cutaneous inflammatory or infectious processes such as acne or herpes. Injection into the eyelids and into blood vessels is contraindicated, under-eye application is restricted to specifically trained specialists, and overcorrection must be avoided. It must not be used at the same time as laser treatment, deep chemical peels or dermabrasion, and following a surface peel injection is not recommended while any inflammatory reaction remains significant.

Juvéderm Ultra 2 works through cross-linked hyaluronic acid of non-animal origin, which binds water and lifts the base of a depression when placed in the mid dermis, smoothing the surface without adding bulk to the surrounding tissue. Its lower fill volume and finer needle suit shallow, precise work where a larger-gauge product would deposit too much in one pass. The lidocaine hydrochloride component acts locally to reduce pain during treatment and plays no part in the correction.
